THE SOLUTION
THE SOLUTION
I chose to advertise for a Silent Disco event, since I enjoy dance music, being outdoors and moving to my own beat. Since disco music peaked in the 1980s, I used this era as a reference point for my design aesthetic.
I created the masthead using a brush pen on paper. I used oil pastels to create the warm, textural and illustration style. I digitalised the masthead and illustration using Adobe Photoshop.
The poster follows a central composition, with the peak of Lion’s Head echoing the vanishing point on the horizon. This draws the viewer’s eye in and gives the illusion of depth. The large scale of the masthead balances the illustration. The large round sun to the right BALANCES the turquoise wedge of ocean to the left. There is a clear HIERARCHY with the masthead text being bold and large, in contrast to the small and light-weight body copy.
The TEXTURAL LINEWORK gives the illustration an impressionistic, youthful and spontaneous quality. The RHYTHMIC brush strokes reflect the upbeat energy of dance music. The Art Deco-inspired TYPOGRAPHY used for the body copy is reminiscent of beachside hotels and resorts, which gives the poster a holiday feeling. The COLOUR VALUE is slightly muted and on the warmer, pinker spectrum which evokes feelings of comfort and nostalgia.
